Baked Apple Fritters
Ingredients:
For the Fritters:
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup white whole wheat flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter, cold and cut into pieces
1/2 cup milk (the higher the fat content, the richer the flavor)
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped apple
For the Glaze:
1 cup confectioner’s sugar
2 tablespoons milk (a higher percentage of fat works best)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
Mix the Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, white whole wheat flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
Cut in the Butter:
Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Prepare the Wet Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Combine the Mixtures:
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined. Fold in the chopped apples.
Shape the Fritters:
Scoop the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, forming 8-10 small mounds. Flatten each mound slightly with the back of a spoon.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the fritters are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow them to cool slightly on a wire rack.
Make the Glaze:
While the fritters are cooling, whisk together the confectioner’s sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Glaze the Fritters:
Drizzle the glaze over the warm fritters, allowing it to set slightly before serving.
These Baked Apple Fritters are a delightful, easy-to-make treat with all the comforting flavors of fall. Perfect for a cozy morning or a sweet afternoon snack!
